Interview with the writer Giannis Lahanis

(Giannis Lahanis’s book, "So, does that mean that I'm dead?" is on sale by ???????? PS)

Your book sometimes is flirting, other times it just touches and then there are times when it really belongs to the genre of free fantasy literature. Is this free direction for the term “fantasy” a way of thinking for you, or a means of expressing yourself?
I believe that in order to answer your question I must first explain the process of how I write, and also the reasons behind my writing.
There has never been in my head some inner process of searching for a style and a personal form of expression. If the majority (or, the whole) of my stories can be characterized as ‘free fantasy literature’, then, that is something that just happened, and was not pre-decided upon.
For me writing has been a process of putting down on paper images and ideas. Moreover, I consider myself a story-teller, rather than a man of literature. I believe that the idea of a 'man of literature' is something that has nothing to do with me, it sounds too artistic, more artistic than how I feel anyway.
I never involved myself with literature to a higher degree than that of a devoted reader. I don’t know the rules, or relevant boundaries set by some people for this art form.
In conclusion, I believe that the things I talk about are the result of pure imagination, one that has been nursed through the reading of many-many books, literally devouring countless movies and finally, through an inherent ability of mine to decipher the ways of the circus called society, which I have learnt to observe as a spectator, rather than as a participant.
Therefore, it’s more of a way of thinking that inevitably turns into a means of expressing myself, since I choose to use writing as my ‘weapon of choice’. I imagine that if I were a painter, my paintings would still appear as something of a similar nature, and they wouldn’t be dealing with little boats and baskets of fruit. They would definitely be something in the realm of fantasy, darker, more ambiguous. Exactly like human nature.

What is the message you are trying to send through your book’s title, “So, does that mean that I’m dead?”? Is it mainly symbolic towards the fabulistic way that you mainly deal with your stories, beyond also a motive, due to its originality, for the reader to buy the book?
This title, for those who haven't yet read the book, is the title (and the first sentence) of the story with the same title that is included in the book. It was chosen because it is indeed original as a title, but also because for me it characterizes my approach to writing. Furthermore, for this particular story I would like to disclose some information regarding its creation. I started this story by putting down this phrase that just popped into my head. Then, came a second sentence, then a third, a fourth, and so on. This is more or less the way that most of my stories have been written.
As mentioned earlier, as a story-teller, what I want when creating a new blank document on my word processor is to let my imagination go wild. I let myself be drawn into my subconscious, receive all sorts of images and build stories on those very same images.
Every time I’ve tried to write something following what is known as ‘art engage, to talk for example for a specific matter, I wasn't able to get past a few paragraphs. Even if the subject in hand was very dear to me and I had tons of things to say. However, every time I started writing by releasing myself completely of any boundaries, I would realize that through writing stories by letting myself completely free, I ended up talking and touching all of those subjects, sometimes by just scratching the surface, other times by going as deep as the rabbit hole gets.
It’s not that I don’t care about expressing my feelings and concerns, on the contrary. I just find it easier doing it a certain way, one that as a creator gives me ultimate pleasure. I may also add that even I rarely re-read my own work; there’ve been times where I was astounded by the product of my imagination, my “ability” if you may, of creating something out of nothing. It may sound bad to be praising myself, but rest assured that it has nothing to do with my qualitative approach to literature or my technique, but only with the storytelling bit.
In other words, I consider myself to be a highly capable story-teller, something that I try to enhance with, let’s say, serious elements.
And to give a more detailed approach. Human relationships is a subject of great interest to me. But I can't talk about them in a somewhat plain voice. I can't create stories of love and hate, embroidered with pieces of everyday social standards and people. Daily stuff. Maybe because that is ex

Shopping anyone?

Shopping anyone?

This is an area called West End.. quite touristy and a young crowd hangs out there. (i know i know.. why were we there!!??! ha)

They have alot of great restaurants here. I can't seem to get into cooking here. I think it is the bugs that come running when I put any food on the counter. They say I will get used to the little sugar ants, but not yet. There are many parts to this island that I love: the people are wonderful for one, the natural habitat is breathtaking, the pace of life is so stress free, but there are things that I find difficult like: bugs, humidity and the power going off alot and how long it takes to do anything on the computer. Am I complaining.. yup a little bit but that's ok because life is like that.. there are things we love and things we need grace for.

these are things I need grace for.

Anyways, Bob and I are going to go huddle around the computer and watch a movie (no tv, so this will work) It helps pass the evening along since there isn't much to do here once it gets dark.
